Conflicts of interest: training information

With the implementation of COI MyDisclosures on May 15, 2023, Conflicts of Interest (COI) training is required for ALL individuals who are identified as being responsible for the design, conduct, reporting or purpose of research on any sponsored project, regardless of sponsor

The COI training is provided via the CITI training platform, takes less than an hour to complete, and is valid for 4 years.

To complete the training in CITI, click here to view these login and enrollment instructions.  Select the “Conflicts of Interest (COI)” course in the Select Curriculum page.

The COI training is intended to reach the broadest ASU researcher audience possible thus some content (e.g. COI requirements for PHS and DOE funded research) may not specifically apply to you. The third CITI COI training module is ASU specific and covers federal, State of Arizona, and ASU policies and requirements related to COI.

After completing the course and passing the quiz, ASU’s systems will automatically recognize that you have completed training.

Other COI Training Details

Public Health Service (PHS) regulations and Department of Energy (DOE) Interim COI Policy also require conflict of interest training:

  • prior to engaging in PHS or DOE-funded research and
  • at least every four (4) years thereafter while engaged in PHS or DOE-funded research. This requirement also applies to research funded by sponsors who have adopted the PHS regulations

This PHS and DOE training requirement also applies to research funded by sponsors who have adopted the PHS conflict of interest regulations.  By completing the ASU-required CITI COI training you have fulfilled the PHS and DOE requirement.

Additional COI training is also required in the following circumstances:

  • there is a change in conflict of interest policy that affects researcher responsibilities
  • an investigator is new to the institution .
  • the institution determines the investigator is not compliant with the financial conflict of interest policy
  • the institution determines the investigator is not compliant with a conflict of interest management plan
